    Which therapy will help?

I can give a general guide here but if you need help to decide do call me for a confidential chat. In general I recommend Bowen Technique for any injury, musculo skeletal problem, chronic health problem or when massage is inappropriate or contra indicated. Aromatherapy is good for relaxation, gentle relief of muscular aches and pains, stress relief and for a treat. It is good to give as a 'gift' (I offer gift vouchers for all treatments) and also for a one-off treatment where an on going course or follow up is not possible.

How many sessions will I need?

Even long standing problems can resolve in 3-5 sessions though some people and certain conditions may take longer to respond. For any kind of long standing or chronic problem I will usually suggest booking in for a series of 3 treatments spaced a week apart after which it is possible to assess progress. Many people find that longer term benefits can be achieved by regular maintenance sessions which can keep the body balanced, improve posture and recovery from pain and help with sports performance among other things.

    How much does it cost?

Bowen Technique costs £35 a session which normally lasts about an hour. For details of aromatherapy prices and concessions go to prices

How does Bowen Technique get its name?

Thomas Ambrose Bowen was born in 1916 in Brunswick, Australia. He started treating the aches and pains of the people with whom he worked in the cement works and woollen mill in Geelong. In the 1960s, he opened his own clinic treating a wide range of problems, largely musculo-skeletal in nature and including a free clinic for children with disabilities. During the 1970s, the Webb Report (Australian Government Report into Complementary Therapies) found that Tom Bowen was treating 13,000 people a year. He died in 1982 but had worked with several people who observed and recorded his methods. It is through the work of these people that the technique was brought to the U.K. and worldwide in the 1980’s and ‘90’s.

What can I expect from my Bowen Treatment?

A Bowen session lasts about an hour though allow up to an hour and a half for the first one which includes a consultation to give me details of the history of your condition and any other health issues.

The treatment itself normally lasts between 35 and 50 minutes including rests when I will leave the room – this allows your body to take on the work and also enables me to assess any changes and respond accordingly.

Treatment is usually carried out whilst you lie comfortably on a couch. If there are any problems with this position you can be made more comfortable with pillows or folded towels or even treated in a seated position – the most important thing is that you feel at ease.

Treatment is possible through light, loose clothing if preferred though it is often more effective directly on the skin and I may need to assess the body, especially where I am looking to help with muscular skeletal problems.

The moves communicate through the nervous system in ways that encourage the body to subtly realign and rebalance. Many people feel relaxation benefits immediately with other changes taking up to a week to become apparent.

For maximum benefit and so as not to overload your body it is recommended that no other physical therapies for example massage, acupuncture, physiotherapy are undergone during the course of Bowen treatments.

    Bowen Technique and Asthma

Bowen Technique has an excellent record in easing the symptoms of asthma. Is there any research about the Bowen Technique?

Yes. There is a growing body of research, studies and case evidence in favour of using Bowen Therapy to help a range of conditions. The Bowen Therapists' European Register has organised a number of national projects, recently into treating back pain and knee and ankle problems.
